Etosha, meaning "Great White Place", is dominated by a massive shimmering salt pan. The national park is one of Africa's finest wildlife reserves offering some of the country’s best wildlife safari. Elephant, zebra, giraffe, rhino and lion, including the rare black-maned lions, are habitually seen at the edge of the natural and man-made watering holes as well as being home to a number of endangered black rhino. Further afield elusive leopards and cheetahs stalk the plains and woodlands.
The east of the park is accessed through the Von Lindequist Gate near Namatomi. In eastern Etosha, though quieter than the south, the wildlife is no less rewarding and a particular highlight is the vast expanse of Fischer's Pan where during the brief rains, pelicans and flamingos fill the shallow waters before they quickly seep away. The western sector is the newest area of the park open to visitors and access is through the Galton Gate. The wildlife has developed without human disturbance and rare species such as black rhino and black-faced impala have established themselves in the area.
The southern part of the park is one of the more popular areas of the park and has great wildlife spotting opportunities. Here, vegetation varies from shrub savannah and grasslands to thorn-bush and woodland savannah. Just outside of the park you will also find the 30,000 hectare Ongava Game Reserve, which offers visitors one of Namibia's few private game reserve experiences. Whilst it may lack the dramatic scenery of the National Park itself, the game viewing and landscapes of Ongava are still a wonderful sight to behold. One of the benefits of staying in a private reserve is that guests can enjoy a greater variety of activities, including day and night time game drives, as well as guided walks. They also offer longer day drives through the Etosha National Park to give guests the chance to see the salt pans. With just four lodges on this vast property, a visit to Ongava will give guests one of Namibia's leading wildlife experiences.

Search for wildlife at night
Watch for predators stalking their prey in the dead of night under a starry canopy. Namibia is one of the least densely populated countries so the night sky is extremely dark. However, the guide is equipped with a special red light to add to the experience.
Be your own safari guide
Etosha National Park covers a huge 20,000 squared km and is home to 4 of the big 5, including the endangered black rhino. The vast majority of roads are in good condition and adequate for self-drivers, so take your own pace as you journey through the park.
